Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
